Universal Orlando announced today that King Kong will officially return to Universal Orlando Resort next year with a new attraction named Skull Island: Reign of King Kong. The attraction, slated to open next summer 2016, will give guests a re-telling of King Kong’s story, including his origination at his home of Skull Island.
According to Universal, it will be one of the largest attractions at its Orlando theme parks, and will be located in a new section of Islands of Adventure between Jurassic Park and Toon Lagoon. Executive produce for Universal Creative Mike West said that no attractions will be removed to make was for the Reign of Kong.
Universal spokeswoman Heather Keroes said in an email, “Skull Island, Reign of Kong at Universal Orlando will have a new story-line not tied to any films, but the upcoming movie shows the relevance of King Kong in pop culture.” The newest attraction will be an indoor/outdoor experience, where guests will travel by foot through dense jungle, explore temple ruins, and encounter hostile natives. Following their excursions, guests will climb aboard a giant truck and pass through a 72-foot tall “Great Gate” before entering a series of caverns. The guests will finally come face-to-face with the colossal King Kong himself.
“It’s really about the scale and the size and the immersive quality,” he said. “I like to call it not a multidimensional, but a multi-experiental attraction,” mentions Mike West.
It is currently unknown how many guests can occupy a vehicle or how long the ride will last, but West says that it will likely be one of the longest at either of Universal’s theme parks.
