In the next few years, Disney® guests will be expecting a much larger Star Wars™ presence throughout the Disney® theme parks. It has been two years since Disney® purchased LucasFilm for $4 billion, and the reason for the delay in implementing Star Wars™ attractions into the parks was because Disney’s® Imagineering team was waiting for director J.J. Abrams to discuss his plans for the upcoming Star Wars™ movie, The Force Awakens.
Walt Disney Company ® chief Bob Iger says that in early development, the team was making rides based on the first six Star Wars™ movies, but he didn’t want to disappoint fans who would be seeing the new film, but nothing from The Force Awakens in any of the new Star Wars™ attractions. According to Iger, the attractions will have a blend of the past, present, and maybe even the future. Iger also previously stated that Star Wars™ would have a big presence inside the company’s resorts.
The first look at new attractions based on the Star Wars™ franchise apart from “Star Tours,” which currently operates at several Disney® parks, will be revealed next year.
With Universal Orlando right next door enticing guests with the meticulously detailed Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, Disney® has to compete, and with the Star Wars™ universe, there is more than enough there to create attractions rich enough to challenge Universal Orlando.
