Guide to Gluten-Free Dining at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Whether it’s for allergy concerns or personal health, maintaining a gluten-free diet has become increasingly common. Unfortunately, places such as theme parks that are trying to serve a large volume of guests with a limited number of different dining locations, it can be difficult to find interesting meal options for diners with food restrictions. Although you should always make your allergies and dietary needs known prior to ordering, here are a few possible restaurant choices for gluten-free dining at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Discovery Island

Flame Tree Barbecue, a quick service restaurant located in Discovery Island, has a menu that can easily accommodate gluten-free diners. Entree options include a ribs, chicken and pulled pork sampler, a ribs and chicken combo platter, a St. Louis dinner platter, and a pork sandwich served on an allergy-friendly bun. All entrees are served with a side of beans and fruit. For a lighter meal, opt for the watermelon salad! On the kids’ menu, gluten-free offerings include an all-beef hot dog on an allergy-friendly roll or a chicken drumstick Mickey Check Meal served with grapes, GoGo squeeZ applesauce, and small milk or water bottle.

Discovery Island’s main dining attraction is Tiffins Restaurant, a nicer table service location. Tiffins has its own separate allergy menu, which makes it a lot easier to navigate possible meal options for anyone with dietary concerns. The special menu’s gluten-free options include:

  • Marinated Grilled Octopus: Marinade made with Salsify, Saffron, and Lemon Caper Olive Oil
  • Black Eyed Pea Fritters with Zhang Yogurt and Peppadew Puree

While having drinks at Nomad Lounge, gluten sensitive guests can dine on a variety of small plate offerings from a special allergy menu including chicken satay with spicy peanut sauce and cucumber salad, a tuna poke bowl with seaweed salad and edamame, pork ribs coated in honey glaze and coriander, and black-eyed pea fritters with roasted garlic raita. For dessert go for the churros, served with vanilla crema and chili strawberry.

Although Pizzafari doesn’t have a ton of options, you can order cheese or pepperoni pizza made on a gluten-free crust at this quick service spot in Discovery Island.

Pandora – The World of Avatar

In the World of Avatar, guests can select gluten friendly options at Satu’li Canteen. The quick service restaurant offers build-your-own bowls with a choice of proteins, base items, and sauces. Starting with the base, gluten friendly options include quinoa and vegetable salad, red and sweet potato hash, mixed whole grains and rice, or romaine and kale salad. Then, select wood grilled chicken, chili-spiced crispy fried tofu, or slow roasted grilled beef for the protein. Top off the bowl with charred onion chimichurri or creamy herb dressing. Kids’ portions are basically the same, but the base offerings are limited to greens or rice.

Africa

Tusker House Restaurant is a buffet style character dining experience featuring Safari Donald Duck and other Disney friends. The buffet stations are filled with a variety of dishes inspired by African flavors, including some options that are gluten friendly.

For a quick service location in Africa, head to Harambe Market. Here gluten-free guests can choose grilled chicken skewers or ribs, both served with green papaya slaw and black-eyed peas salad on the side. Both the chicken skewers and the ribs are also available as a kids’ meal portion, served with a choice of carrot sticks or apple slices.

Asia

In the park’s Asia section, the Yak & Yeti Restaurant is a great choice for gluten-free dining because the table service restaurant has a special menu for diners with allergy concerns. The following dishes from the allergy menu are suitable for gluten-free patrons:

  • Lettuce Cups: Minced Chicken Breast (or substitute Tofu) and Chopped Vegetables with Tamari Sauce in Lettuce Cups

Dinoland U.S.A.

Dinoland U.S.A’s quick service Restaurantosaurus offers pretty standard theme park food like burgers and chicken fingers. Because the restaurant does have allergy-friendly buns, a good portion of the menu is available to diners with dietary concerns. Sandwich options include an Angus bacon cheeseburger, grilled chicken sandwich, hot dog, or grilled chicken BLT on an allergy-friendly bun. Other offerings are gluten-free as well, such as a mixed green salad with roasted chicken, chicken strips, or a grilled chicken salad with summer berries. Kids’ options include a cheeseburger on an allergy-friendly bun, chicken strips, or macaroni and cheese with gluten-free pasta all served with a Dannon Danimals smoothie and apple slices.

The most important thing to remember is that some of these meal options may be substitutions or special requests, so it is still crucial to alert the dining staff to any severe allergies/intolerance before you order!
