15 Things to Know About the Universal Express Passes

Long lines have been something guests have come to expect when visiting Orlando’s theme parks, and Universal Orlando Resort is no exception. Luckily Universal Orlando has developed a convenient way to get around the long lines using Express Passes that allow you to skip the lines to some of you favorite rides and attractions. Universal Orlando Resort’s Universal Express Passes allows guests to skip the long lines, and can be purchased separately from your Universal admission ticket, and has a number of benefits for those looking to make the most out of their time at the theme parks. Here are several things you should know about Universal’s Express Passes.

  1. The Universal Express Pass may be used at the following attractions:
    • Universal Studios Florida
      • Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
      • Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit
      • Shrek 4-D
      • Transformers: The Ride – 3D
      • Revenge of the Mummy
      • Fear Factor Live
      • MEN IN BLACK: Alien Attack

      • Poseidon’s Fury
      • The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride!
      • Caro-Seuss-el
      • One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
      • Cat in the Hat
  2. The Universal Express Pass must be purchased separately from your admission ticket. If you’re not sure if you want an express pass, you can still purchase your admission tickets separately at Tickets2You.com and buy your Express Passes later on at the gate or on Universal’s official website.
  3. During extremely busy times, the express passes can sell out, although it’s pretty rare for that to happen. Rather than purchasing your passes at the gate, you may be better off buying them ahead of time if you plan on visiting the parks during a busy time.
  4. Consider purchasing the pass depending on the days of the week and the season that you go. With some lines being fairly quick to move through, especially during the week or when kids are in school, the pass may not be much of a value for guests visiting during the slow season since you’re already getting through the lines fairly quickly.
  5. Unlike Disney’s FastPass+, where you must come back to the ride or attraction during a pre-determined time in order to skip the lines, Universal’s Express Pass allows you to skip the lines at any time throughout the day.
  6. The prices of the Universal Express Passes become higher during busier seasons and the pass is not valid for every ride or attraction at the parks.
  7. In some cases, single rider lines can be faster than using an express pass. If riding alone is something you’re willing to do, the Universal Express Pass may not be a necessary purchase. Single Riders Lines include the following attractions:
    • Universal Studios Florida
      • Revenge of the Mummy
      • Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
      • Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit
      • MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack
      • TRANSFORMERS: The Ride 3-D
    • Islands of Adventure
      • The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
      • Doom’s Fearfall
      • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
  8. Two types of Universal Express Passes exist: The Universal Express Unlimited and the Universal Express Pass
    • You can use the Universal Express Unlimited Pass an unlimited number of times at participating rides and attractions on each day that your pass is valid
    • The Universal Express Pass allows you to use it one time per ride each day that your pass is valid
  9. You get the best value when the parks are extremely busy. Some lines can end up being hours long, making the Universal Express Pass an invaluable upgrade. Believe it or not though, research has shown that the value of a product, or in this case the satisfaction of a ride, tends to increase when other people line up behind you for the same experience. We may actually end up enjoying the ride even more after waiting in line for a significant amount of time.
  10. When you have a limited amount of time to explore the parks and experience the rides, the Universal Express Pass is also very useful to make the most of your time without having to stand in long lines for hours. The shorter your stay, the more beneficial it may be to purchase the Universal Express Pass.
  11. The Pass can be purchased as a 1-park pass or for both parks. The 1-park express pass is only good for the one park you select, either Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure.
  12. Universal Express Passes are also date-specific, meaning you can only use them on the day you choose to visit. They are also park-specific, meaning you will have to use it only at the park in which you select.
  13. If you plan on staying on site at one of Universal’s hotels, like the Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel or the Royal Pacific Resort, you will receive complimentary unlimited express access for each day of your ticket including the days you check in and out. The Cabana Bay Beach Resort and Sapphire Falls Resort do not offer free Passes during your stay.
  14. The Express Pass is not included with a hotel stay if a separately ticketed event is going on, like Halloween Horror Nights. Those events require their own express passes which need to be purchased if you want express ride access during the event.
  15. Express passes, just like all admission tickets, cannot be sold or transferred to another guest. Avoid falling for the common (and illegal) practice of buying partially-used discount admission tickets. If you are caught using someone else’s express pass, you may be kicked out or even banned from the park.

If you are on the fence about spending the extra cash on Universal Express Passes, think about the time you’ll be spending at the parks, the time of the year you’ll be visiting, and if the cost of the passes is worth the amount of time you’ll be saving not waiting in lines. Remember, if you purchase your Universal Orlando tickets from Tickets2You.com, you can save money and put the savings towards express passes at the parks if you think they will be beneficial to your vacation!
